On Saturday, 23 April 2016, AKTI participated at an event organised by the American Embassy in Cyprus, on the occasion of Earth Day. The event began with a short speech, followed by a group run along the cliffs at Governor’s Beach with sweeping morning views of the Mediterranean. Members of AKTI, within the framework of MarLitCy, then gave a short presentation and organised a five-minute beach “speed clean up” followed by a short source identification workshop to educate participants on common sources of marine pollution.
AKTI, representing the MarLitCy project, was present at the English School's Career Fair last Wednesday (20 April 2016) informing students about career opportunities in the blue and green sectors. The fair was a great success and students were very keen to not only hear about possible careers in the blue sector, but to also take an active stance against marine litter.
AKTI Project and Research Centre, within the framework of the MarLitCy project, organised and implemented an interactive event for 4th year students at the Grammar School in Nicosia on the topics of marine litter and employment in the green/blue sectors. The event, which took place on the 21st March, 2016, involved 80 girls and 73 boys and their teachers.
Xenia I. Loizidou of AKTI Project and Research Centre presented MarLiCy as an innovative way to include women in the peacebuilding process. The presentation took place at an event organised by UNFICYP, Home for Cooperation and AKTI Project and Research Centre, on the occasion of the International Women's Day 2016, on 10 March 2016.
MarLitCy is very proud to announce that two of the actions that it is implementing have been selected by Blue Flag Cyprus as mandatory environmental activities. Blue Flag certified beaches on the island will carry out beach cleanups using the internationally recognized Ocean Conservancy Protocol and submit the data collected to the Cypriot Marine Litter Database. Additionally, all snack bars located on Blue Flag beaches will join the “Responsible Beach Bars” programme, essentially adhering to a Decalogue of Good Practice that aims to protect the coast and the marine environment.
This new MarLitCy-Blue Flag collaboration will ensure that marine environment stakeholders become active participants in efforts to free our seas from marine litter. The project's Responsible Snack Bars campaign has been highlighted in the Mare Notrum Network's August newsletter.Chiringuitos Responsables: Transferring the best practice from Spain to Cyprus! The partners of MarLitCy: MASDER, AKTI, Enalyia Physis and Scuba Divers Organisation, launched the new initiative “Responsible Beach Bars”, which is implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment of Spain through the Biodiversity Foundation. The project partners, full of energy hit the beach bars across Cyprus to distribute the “DECALOGUE” with the environmental best practices and information on how to promote sustainability and preserve our coastlines. Check out the MAP with all the Beach Bars visited. MarLitCy is launching its new 'Responsible Beach Bars' campaign, on 4th July 2015, at 18:00 at Ledra Street (opposite the Municipal Hall). The 'Responsible Beach Bars' campaign aims to engage beach snack bars around the island in joining our efforts to prevent marine litter. In association with the Spanish Biodiversity Foundation, MarLitCy prepared a Decalogue of Good Practices that it will be distributing to beach bars and asking them to pledge their support.
The launch event will take place within the framework of the installation of the MARLISCO Exhibition about marine litter, which will be displayed at the same location from the 3rd to the 5th of July.
