On Wednesday, 20 November 2019, 109 students and professors at the University of Cyprus had the opportunity to hear about the environment, marine litter and career opportunities within the blue sector.
The talk was given by Dr. Xenia Loizidou, in her capacity as Chair of the Board of Directors of AKTI Project and Research Centre, and as the Mediterranean Ambassador for Coasts 2019, On the 21st of September, was International Coastal Cleanup day, which is the largest global beach and seabed cleanup event every year. And of course, the MarLitCy project joined the efforts, not with 1, not with 2 but with 4 cleanups. Our partners together with our supporters and our volunteers undertook two seabed cleanups where the Dive against Debris initiative took place in Cavo Greko, and two beach cleanups at Cavo Maris and Green Bay in Protaras. Over 200kg of litter was removed from our marine environment!!
At the same time, we held our 'meet the sea' event where we provided free diving lessons to children and youth, so they get to explore and love our island's marine environment! We have started our visits to coastal businesses around the island to encourage them to Refuse-Reuse-Reduce-Recycle. During our visits we share our Guide for Responsible Coastal Businesses and try to help businesses identify ways in which they can minimize their negative impact on the marine environment. Below are some photos from our visits to businesses in Famagusta, Salamis, Trikomo/Iskele and Vokolida/Bafra. To see all the businesses that are members of the Network, visit our interactive map. You are cordially invited to the launch event of our project, which will take place in Famagusta, on 25 May 2019! Join us for a day full of activities and for the 'premiere' of the 5 animation videos about marine litter, developed specifically for MarLitCy by students! The project launch event for the new MarLiCy2 project will take place on Saturday, 25 May 2019 in Famagusta. The project innovates, transforming marine litter into a powerful peacebuilding tool, developing synergies, building capacity and fostering partnerships on the island. MarLitCy brings together children and youth, fishermen, divers and coastal businesses from across the divide who want to fight marine litter, an environmental and social problem of common concern. Informing students from the University of Manchester about marine litter and the MarLitCy Project8/5/2019
Today, 8 May 2019, 22 students from the University of Manchester visited MASDER where they were informed about the problem of marine litter and what our project is doing to address it in Cyprus. It was such a pleasure to host you! Between the 13th and the 22nd of April, 5 pilot school teams from the Famagusta region worked with MASDER to learn about marine litter and become inspired so as to develop short animation videos on the subject. On Day 1 students participated in a beach cleanup between Bedi's Beach Bar and Venus Beach Hotel. Each group collected litter that they later used for the creation of videos to be transformed into animation videos. Day 2 was all about idea generation and scenario development, whereas Days 3 and 4 involved the actual animation video development. Special thanks goes out to EMU staff for guiding the students through the whole process. The videos will 'premiere' at the MarLitCy launch event that will take place on Saturday, 25 May 2019, at 4.30pm at MASDER, Famagusta. The curiosity and creativity of our teenagers boosts our hope for a better future. On the 21st April, MarLitCy together with 50 people from Oceanic Catering, a company that provides catering services for the marine sector, visited the Dasoudi beach, Limassol for a marine litter assessment. We collected, separated and recorded around 6kg of litter from an apparently 'clean' beach. If each one of us makes a little effort we will achieve a great big result! 🌊🌍 On Saturday, 6 April 2019, we were invited to participate at the environment day organised by the kindergarten Πουπού η Αλεπού. Children played 'let's fish marine litter' and learned about the impact of debris and specifically plastic in our seas. They also got to see how we can use innovative means to reuse plastic through our 3D printer. Thanks so much for inviting us. It was great fun!!
We are very happy to invite you to the MarLitCy Closing Event that will take place on Wednesday, 29 March, at 5:30pm at the Home for Cooperation in Nicosia. The event will include the Award Ceremony for the winning entries to the MarLitCy Creative Writing, Upcycled Art and Photography competitions, as well as an exhibition of the best competition entries. We hope to see you all there!
